50 South Capital is the rapidly-growing alternative investment arm of Northern Trust, with over $10.0 billion in assets. The private equity group makes primary fund investments, direct co-investments, and secondary investments in the buyout, venture capital and private credit sectors. Geographically, the group has a broad coverage, investing in the US, Europe, and Asia. 50 South Capital is seeking to add a professional in their Chicago headquarters to be part of a 17 person investment team primarily to source, review, analyze, and close investments in US and European buyout funds. In addition, this individual would be responsible for sourcing, vetting and closing direct co-investment opportunities, and to a lesser extent, secondary transactions. In addition, this individual would be responsible for assisting in fundraising efforts, portfolio monitoring, and other special projects.

Northern Trust is one of the world’s largest asset management firms, with over $1.1 trillion in assets under management. The firm has 65 offices across the U.S. and 20 international locations. To-date, 50 South Capital has raised the majority of its funds from its existing client base, but also raises capital from investors outside of the organization. The team has extensive experience investing in the private equity industry and has been led by its founding partners since 2000.
 

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Identifying buyout fund managers in the U.S., Europe and Asia, meeting with them and building relationships in order to position 50 South Capital for investment; this potentially involves travel primarily within the US, and to European countries including the UK, Germany, France, Sweden, the Netherlands; and to Asian cities including Shanghai, Beijing, and Hong Kong
  • Analyzing potential fund investment opportunities, evaluating track records, strategies, and teams, and making a recommendation on whether to invest
  • Conducting general research in the private equity markets, identifying trends, and developing investment theses
  • Sourcing, evaluating and closing co-investment opportunities with fund managers
  • Meeting with fund managers and communicating thoughts to the private equity team
  • Compiling information on the existing fund portfolio and developing insights into fund performance
  • Attending annual investor meetings for underlying funds
  • Assisting with special projects as needed, such as writing industry white papers and compiling ad hoc reports

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships with fund managers
  • Self-starter with the ability to initiate and oversee projects to completion
  • Strong analytical abilities complemented by an ability to read people and a high level of curiosity
  • Ability to work in a collegial, team-oriented environment
  • Ability to present in one-on-one settings and to larger groups
  • Ability to represent the group before investors, other LPs, fund managers, placement agents, and lawyers
  • Must be resourceful in identifying private equity managers and gathering proprietary information about them
  • General knowledge about the buyout industry, deal structures, and various players in the buyout market ecosystem
  • Knowledge of the direct deal process and the steps involved in making direct co-investments
  • Knowledge of and experience in using various valuation techniques.

 

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Undergraduate degree required, MBA highly preferred
  • 3-7 years of work experience, preferably in private equity, finance, lending, investment banking, or consulting; direct private equity experience a plus
