Responsible for providing philanthropic advisory services to Wealth Management clients and internal partners in furtherance of the strategic objectives of Philanthropic Advisory Services. Serves as a resource for practice area and business unit marketing, sales and media relations to advance business development and Northern Trust’s brand and reputation. This is a direct report to the Director of Philanthropic Advisory Services.

  • Provides overall leadership and general management and supervision for the daily operations of the Northern Trust Charitable Giving Program (Northern Trust’s donor advised fund.)
  • Supports sales efforts across business units and for the Northern Trust Charitable Giving Program.
  • Responds to inquiries from clients, prospective clients and internal partners by providing the requested information, products and services or referring the inquiry to the appropriate area for resolution.
  • Provides ongoing training to internal partners regarding charitable giving strategies and philanthropy.
  • Assists in leading client meetings including preparing agendas, family philanthropy retreat materials and managing follow-up communications. Documents and prepares reports regarding client calls.
  • Analyzes reports and identifies trends and client service opportunities. Initiates client communications to add value to existing client relationships.
  • Maintains and expands technical subject matter expertise.
  • Keeps abreast of new and existing philanthropic strategies, charitable giving techniques, the nonprofit sector and wealth planning advisory services.
  • Provides subject area expertise commentary for media coverage.
  • Maintains a high professional profile in the field of philanthropy by participating in events, seminars and conferences in the local community and in the national nonprofit/philanthropic sector that are designed to build and strengthen Northern Trust’s brand.
  • Adheres to applicable regulatory, risk management and compliance best practices and requirements.
The successful candidate will have  
  • At least 4 years of experience advising wealthy clients in the areas of charitable giving strategies and philanthropy. 
  • At least 4 years of experience working with individuals and families in the areas of estate planning and wealth transfer planning in a client service role or in a planned giving leadership position with a nonprofit organization(s). 
  • In-depth knowledge of subject and commitment to ongoing augmentation of expertise. 
  • Relationship management skills required to assist and advise individuals and families regarding philanthropic strategies and best practices, planned giving, private foundation administration and succession planning.
  • Analytic and organizations skills required to research and resolve inquiries and to coordinate and manage conflicting priorities, multiple projects and significant and varied workflow. 
  • Strong writing and presentation skills required for client presentations, internal training and to support the development of marketing and sales materials for existing and prospective clients. 
  • Leadership skills, specifically meeting facilitation and conflict resolution, required to identify client goals and objectives, address client needs respond to inquiries from internal partners and manage special projects Interpersonal skills required to work collaboratively with high net worth individuals and families (clients), internal partners, professional advisors, including estate planning attorneys, accountants and investment managers. 
  • JD designation is highly preferred. 
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office – Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
