JOB SUMMARY: 
Responsible for managing a team of long duration portfolio managers within the Fixed Income Investments unit.  Participates in developing the strategic plan and manages expenses. May manages fee revenue producing investment accounts for institutional and individual investors. Operates within the framework of Northern’s investment philosophy, developing strategies designed to achieve specific investment goals. Conducts the performance management process, identifies training and development needs, and establishes performance standards for the portfolio management function.

 

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Develops investment policies and directs investment management activities within Fixed Income.
  • Manages the larger and potentially most complex and important accounts/fund(s).  Analyzes and plans the overall investment strategy for Fixed Income with continuous revision of accounts objectives and the context of client needs.
  • Manages Fixed Income investment activities for a full set of major fee revenue producing accounts, representing large and sensitive high net worth personal trusts, individual investments, and court appointed accounts.
  • Develops, recommends, and directs the execution of programs designed to achieve investment objectives for specific individual or institutional clients.  Reviews and analyzes investments to select Fixed Income assets.
  • Shares responsibility for the Fixed Income Investment team’s business results (e.g., profitability, staffing) with Head of Fixed Income.
  • Makes staffing decisions, manages expenses and salary review process for the division.
  • Participates in developing division strategic plan and sets goals and priorities based on the direction set for the unit; follows through to ensure that objectives are met.
  • Provides leadership and guidance to staff, fostering an environment that encourages employee participation, teamwork, and communication.
  • Serves on standing investment services committees and on ad hoc unit committees as appropriate.

 

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: 

  • Maintains a current awareness of new Fixed Income investment strategies and instruments through regular contact with other industry professionals, as well as personal research.  
  • Knowledge of investment and portfolio management theory, accounting, financial principles, and investment strategies and instruments is required to manage Fixed Income portfolios or conduct research activities. 
  • Knowledge of investment terminology, characteristics of the various marketplaces, the laws and regulations governing trust investments and taxation, the bank’s investment policies, procedures, and strategies is required to manage portfolios or investment research activities.  
  • Sales and negotiating skills are required to guide sensitive or difficult situations. 
  • Leadership and organizational skills are required to determine the unit goals, resources needed, and to assess and develop the skills of the staff.

 

ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: 

  • A College or University degree and/or relevant proven work experience is required
  • 10+ years of Fixed Income portfolio management experience
  • Quantitative/Factor-Based and ETF fixed income experience
