This high profile management position is responsible for developing and leading the Functional Control team in Chicago. The Functional Control team is a function within the Corporate Controller’s department that provides the interface between the Business and Finance from a financial accounting, control, systems and reporting perspective. The role has responsibility for working with the Business to make sure that the processes, systems and accounts that they own are appropriately controlled and reflected in the Corporation’s financial statements. The successful individual will play a significant role in developing the team, provide thought leadership and will be required to have strong interaction and working relationships with the business, operational and finance/treasury teams. The role will report to the Global Head of Functional Control.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Leadership and Management
Manage and develop a small but highly efficient and high performing Functional Control team based in Chicago;
Drive and support change in the Controllers department;
Establish and develop strong working relationships and open communication with key stakeholders including the operations team and treasury team;
Set clear and measureable goals and objectives for the team and individuals, ensuring performance assessments are completed in line with corporate requirements; and
Demonstrate the ability and the desire to share the knowledge in the form of training, mentoring or coaching others.

Operational
Partner with different business and operational lines to ensure that support is provided by Controllers as their businesses expand, develop and grow. This would include, but not be limited to, the build out of new products, locations and systems;
Serve as sub-ledger owner, from a Finance perspective, for accounts and systems managed outside Finance;
Understand the end to end process flow, acting as the link between the front/middle/back office and Finance;
Review processes, controls and systems within and outside of Finance to ensure that the risk of misstatement of the Corporation’s financial statements is appropriately mitigated;
Investigation of issues affecting financial and regulatory reporting, documentation of issues and concluding on new or improved controls required;
Review of SOX documentation and working with the business to strengthen controls to ensure the integrity of the financial statements;
Liaise with the Global Financial Control Team to participate in documentation, control analysis, scoping, remediation of any open issues/deficiencies and quarterly certification; and
Work with other Finance teams to implement and drive change to achieve the Finance strategy objectives.

SKILLS / EXPERIENCE

 

Required Skills
Qualified accountant (CPA) with multiple years’ experience in a multi-currency financial services environment;
Experienced background in a corporate financial control environment with a sound knowledge of accounting, reporting and financial control requirements as well as statutory and audit requirements;
Ability to understand how the detailed activities in areas of focus fit into the larger financial accounting and reporting picture for individual legal entities and Corporation as a whole;
Strong ability to build consensus and influence behaviour of those outside of direct reporting line;
Strong knowledge of US GAAP accounting requirements.
