The Northern Trust Rotational Development Program (RDP) is designed to develop the technical skills, business acumen, and leadership abilities of early career professionals. 

During the 12-18 month program (dependent on the track), participants will have the opportunity to perform meaningful assignments in various rotations while gaining a broader perspective, along with exposure to leadership of the different departments in their chosen career track. Rotations are selected based on the business need as well as the RDP member’s career interests, goals, and skills.

 

RDP Support and Development

The program provides participants with dedicated ongoing support and professional development opportunities that include:

  • Two program mentors
  • Monthly speaker series
  • Learning & Development sessions
  • Career Development opportunities
  • Comprehensive orientation
  • Social Events
  • Access to RDP Alumni Network

The Rotational Development Program offers five tracks:

  • Corporate Finance Track 
  • Asset Management Track
  • Technology Track 
  • Asset Services of America Track
  • Credit Track 

Credit Track

 

The Credit track includes three 4-month rotations.

 

The Credit Track offers an opportunity to participate in a structured 3-month Credit Training program where participants develop an understanding of credit products, lending practices, financial analysis, and the banking industry as a whole. Members of the Credit Track then participate in an underwriting rotation with an emphasis on either Corporate& Institutional or Wealth Management clients. Rotations in private banking, custody, and other electives are also available.  

 Examples of potential responsibilities (note: work varies by rotation and business need):

  • Analyze financial statements, tax returns, and other financial documentation to provide sound recommendations on how to meet a client’s credit needs.
  • Support a team of bankers in servicing a portfolio of clients.
  • Participate in client calls and meetings, and manage relationships both internally and externally.
  • Complete prospecting initiatives and summarize key areas of risk for the business.
  • Participate in ratings agency calls, bank group meetings, and other potential educational opportunities about the commercial banking industry.
  • Partner and learn about different areas of the private banking business, including trust and investment services.

Placement Opportunities:

  • Credit Portfolio Manager – Corporate & Institutional Services
  • Underwriter, National Credit Services – Wealth Management

Requirements:

  • Intermediate proficiency in accounting – minimum of 3 courses completed
  • Strong written and oral communication skills – required to underwrite and present credit memos to credit committees
  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Accounting or Business, from a four-year college or university with expected graduation date between December 2021 through Summer 2022 (Start dates will be June/July 2022) preferred
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Applicants must not now or in the future require sponsorship for employment visa status to work in the United States

Recommended Attributes:

  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office – Excel, Word, PowerPoint
  • Strong understanding of financial statements with the ability to assess, analyze, and interpret complex financial information
  • Interpersonal skills and personal courage (participating in meetings, asking questions, supporting bankers in client meetings, etc.)
  • Strong time management and project management skills

Members of Northern Trust’s Rotational Development Program possess the following:

  • A bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university
  • A cumulative undergraduate GPA of at least a 3.0
  • Previous internships or related work experience
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Analytical, quantitative and problem solving skills
  • Adaptability and ability to learn quickly in high-pressure environments
  • Leadership, teamwork and client servicing ability
  • A well-rounded character, appreciating diversity and valuing inclusion
  • Knowledge and interest in Northern Trust and the financial services industry
  • Some technical acumen (preferred) 

After successfully completing the program, qualified Associates will apply for a role that best leverages the experiences they’ve gained throughout their rotations and meets their career interests. Participation in the Program is not guaranteed for any period of time, nor is it a promise of employment since participants are employed at will.
